Revelation 6:1-8, Four Horsemen Text

1st Seal – 1st Horseman
1 Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!”
2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

2nd Seal – 2nd Horseman
3 When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!”
4 And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

3rd Seal – 3rd Horseman
5 When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand.
6 And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”

4th Seal – 4th Horseman
7 When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!”
8 And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.

11 The LORD said to me: “Do not pray for the welfare of this people.
12 Though they fast, I will not hear their cry, and though they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”

Jeremiah 15:1-3

3 I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the LORD: the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, and the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.

Jeremiah 16:3-4
3 For thus says the LORD concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning the mothers who bore them and the fathers who fathered them in this land:

The Four Horsemen: God’s Arrows of Judgment — Sword, Famine, Pestilence, and Wild Beasts

This section presents concise scriptural examples from the Torah & Biblical Prophets showing how God has used His Four Horsemen to carry out His divine judgment throughout time and the entire Bible. Understanding God’s past use of His Four Horsemen reveals His future use of His Four Horsemen in Revelation 6.

➥ Yahweh refers to the Curses or Plagues of the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Seals as “MY ARROWS” at Deuteronomy 32:23-25 (also Ezekiel 5:16-17).
➥ “Sword, Famine, Pestilence & Wild Beasts is the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Seal or the 4 Horsemen of Revelation!
This is why the 1st Seal Rider is only mentioned with a Bow. His Arrows are the Curses or Plagues of the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Seals!  Jesus Christ is Firing God’s Arrows of “Sword, Famine, Pestilence & Wild Beasts targeting the disobedient.

➥ “Sword, Famine, Pestilence & Wild Beasts” are part of YHWH’s consistent biblical pattern of “CURSES” or “PLAGUES” for Disobedience from Genesis to Revelation! Leviticus 26:25, 33, 36-37, Deuteronomy 32:25, 41-42

4 Horsemen, four Horsemen, apocalypse, beginning-of-birth-pains, Beginning of Sorrows, Matthew 24, book-of-revelation, death, famine, first-seal, four-horsemen-of-the-apocalypse, fourth-seal, green, hades, death, horse, hunger, kill-14, pale-green, pestilence, plague, Red Horse, second-seal, third-seal, white Horse, Bow, Crown, Conquering, wild-beasts, sword, Take Peace awar, War, Third Seal, Famine, Hunger, Balances, Scales, Ezekiel 14, Deuteronomy 32, Revelation 6, Jeremiah 14, Jeremiah 15, Jeremiah 16, Leviticus 26, Ezekiel 14

Theme of Revelation & the Bible = “Blessings & Curses”

➥ YHWH’s consistent THEME of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation is the “Blessings & Curses” of Deuteronomy Chapters 27-33!
“Blessings” for “Obedience” or “Curses” for “Disobedience!”

➥ The Book of Revelation is the “Blessings” or “Reward” for Obedience (Rev 11:18) & the “Curses” or “Plagues” for Disobedience on a GLOBAL SCALE!

➥ The Destruction & Annihilation of the 7 Seals, 7 Trumpets, 7 Bowls of Wrath & Liquidation of 5 of the 7 Churches are the curses, plagues & consequences for disobedience!

➥ This is why the End & Last Chapter of Revelation 22:3 concludes with, “No longer will there be any curse.”

➥ The Blessings & Curses” is the Source of Revelation. It is the earliest place where God has “made known the END FROM the BEGINNING.” (Isaiah 46:9)
Much of the Language contained in the “Blessings & Curses” is REPEATED in the Book of Revelation.

➥ The Blessing of Curses of Deuteronomy 27-33 provides God’s thinking, reasoning & explanations for the curses or plagues that Revelation does not.

➥ Ezekiel 14:21
“For thus says the Lord God: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem MY 4 DISASTROUS ACTS OF JUDGMENT, sword, FAMINE, wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!

God’s 4 Horsemen are His consistent curses or plagues for disobedience in the Bible from the Genesis to the Book of Revelation! God’s 4 Horsemen can best be summarized as “sword,” “famine,” “pestilence” and “wild beasts” which repeatedly appears at Lev 26:22-26, Deut 32:22-25, Ezekiel 5:12-17, 14:12-23, Jeremiah 15:1-5, 16:3-4 and Revelation 6:8.
In the Bible, the first time God’s 4 Horsemen appear is for punishment for breaking His covenant at Leviticus 26:22-26 and Deuteronomy 32:23-25.

In the Book of Revelation, God’s 4 Horsemen are the 1st 4 judgments released as the Lamb opens the 1st 4 Seals: a rider on a white horse with a bow and a crown who goes out conquering; a rider on a red horse who takes peace from the earth and wields a great sword; a rider on a black horse holding scales with rationed prices for wheat and barley; and a rider on a pale horse named Death, followed by Hades, given authority over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword, famine, pestilence, and wild beasts.
God’s 4 Horsemen in the Book of Revelation is the 1st of 3 depopulation predictions where “1/4” of the earth is killed!

You’re seeing God’s “arrows” of judgment—sword (war), famine, pestilence, and wild beasts—unleashed through these four seals. The first rider carries only a bow because the “arrows” are the plagues of the next three seals.

—–
The images and captions on the page summarize the seal symbols this way: White horse—“bow, crown, conquering”; Red horse—“take peace away, war”; Black horse—“balances/scales” (famine); Pale/green horse—“pestilence/plague,” with Death and Hades (Revelation 6:8).
The text repeatedly groups the judgments as “Sword, Famine, Pestilence & Wild Beasts.”
It also notes that the 1st Seal rider is mentioned with a bow, linking the white horse to that imagery.

You’re directed to interpret them by reading Revelation 6 alongside the Torah, Prophets, and Jesus’ teaching—Deuteronomy 32 (“My arrows”), Ezekiel 14 (“four disastrous acts of judgment”), Leviticus 26 (“vengeance of the covenant”), and Matthew 24 (“beginning of birth pains”). Understanding how God used these four judgments in the past clarifies how to understand them in Revelation 6.
—–
The page frames the horsemen within a broader interpretive theme used in end-time study: the Bible’s “Blessings & Curses” pattern (Deut 27–33) applied on a global scale in Revelation, presenting the seals as covenant curses/plagues for disobedience.
It also proposes an ordering guide for students of prophecy: the Song of Moses (Deut 32) “combines, staggers, blends and orders” the 1st–2nd Trumpets with the 1st–4th Seals (the horsemen)—a study approach believers use when aligning seals and trumpets.

They begin when the Lamb opens the seals—first the white horse, then the red, then the black, then the pale—each released in sequence by the opening of the first four seals.
—–
The page situates the horsemen explicitly as the 1st–4th Seals, describing them as part of the early “Beginning of Birth Pains” (Matt 24:7–8) that start as the seals open.
It further suggests—within its study framework—that the 1st & 2nd Trumpets precede the Four Horsemen in the ordering drawn from the Song of Moses.

You’ll see peace removed as people slay one another (war); you’ll see rationed, costly staples measured on scales; and you’ll see mass death by sword, famine, pestilence, and wild beasts affecting a fourth of the earth.
——–
According to the page, their arrival is marked by the specific covenant-curse set: war (sword), famine (scales), pestilence/plague, and wild beasts.
It highlights Revelation 6:8 (the pale horse) as a signal event—authority over a quarter of the earth—underscoring the scale of devastation.

A fourth of the earth will be given over to death by war, hunger, plague, and wild beasts, bringing global fear, terror, and economic upheaval.
——
The page stresses the severity: during the 4th Seal a “quarter of the earth” is killed—illustrated as about 1.75 billion people—by war, hunger, and plague, with massive social and economic fallout (“lockdowns and economic impact”).

Yes!
The fourth seal states that “Death and Hades” “were given authority over a fourth of the earth to kill” at Revelation 6:7-8
Revelation 6:7-8 (ESV)
“And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.”

  1. David Litaba says:

Revelation 6 offers a vivid portrayal of apocalyptic events, with verse 8 standing out as a stark reminder of the widespread devastation symbolized by the pale horse and its rider, Death, who is given authority over a quarter of the earth. This verse underscores the severity of the judgments unleashed and the inevitable consequences of a world in rebellion against God.
