1st Bowl of Wrath – “Painful Sores!”

The Seven Bowls of Wrath, also called the Seven Vials, are the final series of God’s judgments described in Revelation 16. Each bowl represents a devastating outpouring of divine wrath upon the earth — targeting those who worship the beast and reject God. These judgments mark the completion of God’s anger and the preparation for Christ’s return.

Most scholars believe the bowls occur during the latter part of the Great Tribulation, following the Seven Seals and Seven Trumpets. Revelation presents them as the final stage of divine judgment before the Second Coming of Christ — when God declares, “It is done!” (Revelation 16:17).

The bowls specifically target those who have the mark of the beast and worship his image (Revelation 16:2). Believers who remain faithful to Christ are not appointed to God’s wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9) and are protected or delivered during these judgments.

The Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls are progressive judgments:

  • The Seals unveil God’s plan.
  • The Trumpets intensify His warnings.
  • The Bowls bring the final completion of His wrath.
    Revelation 15:1 confirms this progression: “…with them the wrath of God is finished.”

The bowls demonstrate God’s justice, holiness, and sovereignty.
They serve as both judgment for unrepentant humanity and vindication for the righteous. Through them, God fulfills His promise that evil will not go unpunished, and every wrong will be made right.

Futurist View: The bowls are future literal judgments during the Tribulation.
Preterist View: They symbolize God’s judgment on Rome or Jerusalem in the first century.
Historicist View: They unfold through various eras of Church history.
Idealist View: They represent ongoing spiritual truths about God’s judgment against evil throughout time.

Each bowl represents a distinct act of judgment:
Painful sores on those with the mark of the beast
The sea turns to blood, and all sea life dies
Rivers and springs become blood
The sun scorches people with intense heat
Darkness covers the kingdom of the beast
The Euphrates River dries up to prepare the way for kings of the east
A global earthquake and massive hail complete God’s wrath
These echo the plagues of Egypt and symbolize both physical and spiritual devastation.

Interpretations vary.
Literal view: The bowls are real global disasters that will occur during the Tribulation.
Symbolic view: The bowls represent God’s total judgment against sin, false religion, and human rebellion.
Many theologians see them as both — literal events with deep spiritual significance.

God’s wrath flows from His perfect love and holiness.
Because He loves righteousness, He must oppose sin and evil. The Seven Bowls show that God’s patience has a limit, and ultimate justice will prevail. His judgments are not cruel — they are the righteous response of a holy God against unrepentant rebellion.

When the seventh bowl is poured into the air, a mighty voice from the throne declares, “It is done!” (Revelation 16:17). This final act unleashes a global earthquake, hailstones weighing a talent (about 100 lbs), and the collapse of the cities of the nations — signaling the end of Babylon and the dawn of Christ’s victorious reign.

The message calls believers to repentance, faithfulness, and readiness.
It reminds Christians to:

  • Remain pure and alert in a corrupt world
  • Trust God’s justice even amid suffering
  • Share the Gospel urgently before judgment falls

Revelation 17–18 shows that the outpouring of the bowls prepares for Babylon’s destruction — the fall of the world’s corrupt religious, political, and economic systems. The Seventh Bowl signals this downfall, paving the way for the return of Christ and the Millennial Kingdom.
