In the second trumpet judgment, one-third of the sea turns to blood and one-third of the sea creatures die, whereas in the Second Bowl of Wrath 100% of the sea becomes blood and 100% of sea creatures die, marking a progression from a partial to a total judgment on the sea.

The Second Bowl is directly compared with the first plague in Egypt, noting that there are only three Scriptures outside Revelation where YHWH turns water to blood and all three concern the ten plagues: in Exodus 7:14–24 the Nile and all the waters of Egypt are struck, turned to blood, the fish die, the river stinks, the Egyptians cannot drink the water, and blood is everywhere in Egypt; Psalm 78 and Psalm 105 recall the same event by stating that God turned their rivers and waters into blood and killed their fish while working signs and wonders in Egypt.

The timeline moves from the 5th Seal, where martyrs under the altar ask how long until their blood is judged and avenged, to the series of Seven Vials (Bowls): in the 1st Vial harmful and painful sores come on those who receive the mark of the beast, in the 2nd Vial the sea becomes blood and every living thing in it dies, in the 3rd Vial the rivers and springs turn to blood, and these two Bowls are identified as a partial answer to the martyrs’ question, with the full avenging of their blood completed in the 7th Bowl at Revelation 19:2.
