Part of God’s reason for the Battle of Armageddon is described in Joel 3:2!

1 “For, behold, in those days, And in that time, When I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will gather all nations, And will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; And I will execute judgment on them there for my people, And for my heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations. They have divided my land,

3 And have cast lots for my people, And have given a boy for a prostitute, And sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.
4 “Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre, and Sidon, And all the regions of Philistia? Will you repay me? And if you repay me, I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head.

5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, And have carried my finest treasures into your temples,
6 And have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, That you may remove them far from their border.
7 Behold, I will stir them up out of the place where you have sold them, And will return your repayment on your own head;
8 AndI will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, And they will sell them to the men of Sheba, To a faraway nation, For Yahweh has spoken it.”

Joel chapter 3 presents a sequence in which God restores the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, gathers the nations for judgment in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, calls the nations to prepare for war, and then executes judgment described with harvest and winepress imagery. It includes “the day of Yahweh” drawing near in the valley of decision, cosmic signs in the heavens, Yahweh roaring from Zion while being a refuge to His people, and a concluding restoration in which Yahweh dwells in Zion and Judah and Jerusalem endure.

The Valley of Jehoshaphat is identified as the place where God brings down “all nations” to execute judgment “for my people, and for my heritage, Israel,” because they were scattered among the nations and the land was divided. It is also where God sits to judge the surrounding nations after they gather.

Tyre, Sidon, and the regions of Philistia are addressed in the context of wrongdoing against God’s people and what was taken from them—silver, gold, and treasured things—along with the selling of the children of Judah and Jerusalem. They are confronted as part of God’s declaration that repayment will be returned on their own heads.

Joel 3:3–8 describes the plunder and mistreatment of God’s people: casting lots for them, exchanging a boy for a prostitute, selling a girl for wine, taking silver and gold, carrying treasures into temples, and selling the children of Judah and Jerusalem far away. It then describes a reversal in which God stirs the sold ones up from where they were sold and returns repayment, including selling the offenders’ sons and daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, who then sell them to the men of Sheba.

The Sabeans are referenced as “the men of Sheba,” described as “a faraway nation” to whom the children of Judah sell the sons and daughters of those who oppressed them, as part of the declared repayment.

Joel 3 is presented as one of the biblical chapters that describe the 6th Bowl of Wrath battle of Armageddon, connected with Revelation 16:12–16 and Revelation 19:11–21. The gathering of nations for judgment and the war imagery are aligned with the assembling for battle described in those Revelation passages.

Joel 3:13 describes judgment using harvest language: the sickle is put in because the harvest is ripe, the winepress is full, and the vats overflow because wickedness is great. This imagery is identified as part of the biblical source connected to Revelation 14:14–20, where the grape harvest and the “winepress of the wrath of God” are described.

Joel chapter 3 explicitly places its events within the context of the Day of the Lord by declaring that “the day of Yahweh is near” in the valley of decision. This declaration accompanies the gathering of nations, the execution of judgment, cosmic disturbances in the heavens, and Yahweh’s intervention from Zion. The Day of the Lord is presented as the time when judgment is carried out on the nations and protection and restoration are provided for God’s people.

Joel 3 describes the sun and moon being darkened and the stars withdrawing their shining, alongside the heavens and the earth shaking. In the same context, Yahweh roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem while being a refuge and stronghold for His people.

Joel 3:15–16 is presented as part of the biblical source connected to Revelation 6:12–16, where the sixth seal includes a great earthquake and cosmic disturbance such as the sun becoming black and the moon becoming like blood.

Egypt and Edom are described as becoming desolate because of violence done to the children of Judah and because innocent blood was shed in the land. This appears within the concluding restoration section where Judah and Jerusalem endure and Yahweh dwells in Zion.

Joel 3 is presented as describing the conditions the Great Multitude of Revelation 7 experience during the Great Tribulation, and it concludes with God restoring the earth, His people, and Jerusalem after the violence inflicted during that period.

Joel chapter 3 is presented as describing events associated with the Great Tribulation, the gathering of nations for judgment, and the 6th Bowl of Wrath battle of Armageddon. It is consistently treated as prophetic and aligned with future judgment scenes described in Revelation, followed by restoration when Yahweh dwells in Zion. No statement is made that these events have already been fulfilled, indicating the prophecy is presented as awaiting fulfillment within the described eschatological framework.

Joel chapter 3 is important for biblical prophecy because it is presented as one of the key Old Testament passages describing the gathering of nations for judgment, the battle associated with Armageddon, and the sequence of events surrounding the Great Tribulation. It is directly connected to multiple Revelation passages, including the 6th Bowl of Wrath, the harvest and winepress judgment, and cosmic disturbances, making it foundational for understanding later prophetic descriptions of global judgment and restoration.
