From Jeremiah Chapters 7, 11, 14 and Isaiah Chapters 1 & 59
YHWH has provided a very extensive list of people engaging in specific behaviors He does NOT want you to pray for at Jeremiah Chapters 7, 11 & 14, and Isaiah Chapters 1 & 59.
In these same chapters, He also provides His list of prayers He does NOT Hear.
The Specific places God says, “do not pray,” or He will “not” “Hear” or “Listen” are: Jeremiah 7:16,11:14,14:11-12, and Isaiah 1:15,59:2. In these chapters God also provides an extensive list of what not to pray for and prayers that He does not hear.
➥ Jeremiah 7:16
16 “As for you, DO NOT PRAY for these people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and DO NOT INTERCEDE WITH ME, for I WILL NOT HEAR YOU.”
➥ Jeremiah 11:14
14 “Therefore DO NOT PRAY FOR THIS PEOPLE, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, for I WILL NOT LISTEN when they call to me in the time of their trouble.
➥ Jeremiah 14:11
11 The Lord said to me: “DO NOT PRAY FOR THE WELFARE OF THIS PEOPLE.
➥ Isaiah 1:15
15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you;
EVEN THOUGH YOU MAKE MANY PRAYERS, I WILL NOT LISTEN…
➥ Isaiah 59:2
“your sins have hidden his face from you so that HE DOES NOT HEAR.”
Theme Scripture
➥ Jeremiah 7:16
16 “As for you, DO NOT PRAY FOR THIS PEOPLE, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and DO NOT INTERCEDE WITH ME, for I WILL NOT HEAR YOU.
Jeremiah 7:6-33
YHWH’s List of Reasons for Prayers He Does NOT Hear:
➥ 6…oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow,
➥ …shed innocent blood
➥ …go after other gods
➥ 8…trust in deceptive words
➥ 9…steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely,
make offerings to Baal,
go after other gods that you have not known,
➥ 10 and then come and stand before me in this house,
which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’
—only to go on doing all these abominations?
➥ 11…become a den of robbers in your eyes?
➥ 12 …evil of my people
➥ 13…did not listen …when I called you, you did not answer,
➥ 16…”As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you.
➥ 18…The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven.
➥ And they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, MY ANGER, and MY WRATH WILL BE POURED OUT ON THIS PLACE, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.”
➥ 24 …did not obey or incline their ear,
but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts,
➥ and went backward and not forward.
➥ 26 Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear,
➥ but stiffened their neck.
➥ They did worse than their fathers.
➥ 27 …did not obey the voice of the Lord their God,
➥ and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.
29 “‘Cut off your hair and cast it away;
raise a lamentation on the bare heights,
for the Lord has rejected and forsaken
the generation of his wrath.’
➥ 30 “For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord.
➥ They have set their detestable things in the house that is called by my name, to defile it.
➥ 31 And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
32 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the VALLEY OF SLAUGHTER; for they will bury in Topheth because there is no room elsewhere.
33 And the DEAD BODIES OF THIS PEOPLE WILL BE FOOD FOR THE BIRDS OF THE AIR, and for the beasts of the earth, and none will frighten them away. 34 And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land shall become a WASTE.
Theme Scripture
➥ Jeremiah 11:14
14 “Therefore DO NOT PRAY FOR THIS PEOPLE, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, for I WILL NOT LISTEN when they call to me in the time of their trouble.
Jeremiah 11:3-17
YHWH List of Reasons for Prayers He Does NOT Hear:
➥ 3 …Cursed be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant
➥ 8 …did not obey or incline their ear,
➥ …walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart.
➥ 10 …turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words.
➥ …gone after other gods to serve them.
➥ …broken the covenant that I made with their fathers.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
11 Therefore, thus says the Lord, Behold, I am bringing DISASTER upon them that they cannot escape. Though they cry to me, I WILL NOT LISTEN TO THEM.
➥ 13 For your gods have become as many as your cities, O Judah, and as many as the streets of Jerusalem are the altars you have set up to shame, altars to make offerings to Baal.
14 “Therefore DO NOT PRAY FOR THIS PEOPLE, or LIFT UP A CRY OR PRAYER ON THEIR BEHALF, for I WILL NOT LISTEN when they call to me in the time of their trouble.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
15 What right has my beloved in my house when she has done many vile deeds? Can even sacrificial flesh avert your doom? Can you then exult? 16 The Lord once called you a green olive tree, beautiful with good fruit.’ But with the roar of a great tempest, HE WILL SET FIRE TO IT, and its branches will be CONSUMED. 17 The Lord of hosts, who planted you, has decreed DISASTER against you,
➥ because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal.”
Theme Scripture
➥ Jeremiah 14:11-12
11 The Lord said to me: “DO NOT PRAY FOR THE WELFARE OF THIS PEOPLE. 12 Though they fast, I will not hear their cry, and though they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”
Jeremiah 14:7-18
YHWH List of Reasons for Prayers He Does NOT Hear:
➥ 7 …our iniquities testify against us,
➥ …backslidings are many;
➥ we have sinned against you.
➥ 10 …loved to wander
➥ …not restrained their feet;
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
therefore YHWH does not accept them; now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins.”
Lying Prophets
➥ 13 …the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” 14 And the Lord said to me:
➥ “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not send them, and who say, ‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: BY SWORD AND FAMINE THOSE PROPHETS SHALL BE CONSUMED.
16 AND THE PEOPLE TO WHOM THEY PROPHESY shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.
➥ 18 …For both prophet and priest ply their trade through the land
and have no knowledge.’”
Theme Scripture
➥ Isaiah 1:15
15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you;
EVEN THOUGH YOU MAKE MANY PRAYERS, I WILL NOT LISTEN…
Isaiah 1:3-31
YHWH List of Reasons for Prayers He Does NOT Hear:
➥ 3 …my people do not understand.”
➥ 4 …sinful nation,
➥ …laden with iniquity,
➥ offspring of evildoers,
➥ children who deal corruptly!
➥ …forsaken the Lord,
➥ …despised the Holy One of Israel,
5 …The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
➥ 12 …trampling of my courts?
➥ 13 …vain offerings;
➥ incense is an abomination to me.
➥ New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations—I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.
➥ 14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts
my soul hates;
15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you;
EVEN THOUGH YOU MAKE MANY PRAYERS, I WILL NOT LISTEN;
➥ your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, 17 learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.
➥ 21 How the faithful city has become a whore,
➥ …murderers.
23 Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves.
➥ Everyone loves a bribe
➥ and runs after gifts.
➥ They do not bring justice to the fatherless,
➥ and the widow’s cause does not come to them.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
31 And the strong shall become tinder, and his work a spark,
and BOTH OF THEM SHALL BURN together, with none to quench them.
Theme Scripture
➥ Isaiah 59:2
“your sins have hidden his face from you so that HE DOES NOT HEAR.”
Isaiah 59:2-19
YHWH List of Reasons for Prayers He Does NOT Hear:
➥ 2 …your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
➥ and your sins have hidden his face from you so that HE DOES NOT HEAR.
➥ 3 For your hands are defiled with blood
➥ and your fingers with iniquity;
➥ your lips have spoken lies;
➥ for your tongue mutters wickedness.
➥ 4 No one enters suit justly;
➥ no one goes to law honestly;
➥ they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies, they conceive mischief, and give birth to iniquity.
➥ 5 They hatch adders’ eggs; they weave the spider’s web;
➥ 6 …Their works are works of iniquity,
➥ and deeds of violence are in their hands.
➥ 7 Their feet run to evil,
➥ and they are swift to shed innocent blood;
➥ their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
desolation and destruction are on their highways.
➥ 8 The way of peace they do not know,
➥ and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
no one who treads on them knows peace.
➥ 13 transgressing, and denying the Lord, and turning back from following our God,
➥ speaking oppression and revolt,
➥ conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words.
➥ 14 Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter.
➥ 15 Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself prey. The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.
(Generation of YHWH’s Wrath – Jer 7:29)
18 According to their deeds, so will he repay, WRATH to his adversaries, repayment to his enemies; to the coastlands he will render repayment.
19 So they shall fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives.
Evil in the Land
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
2 “Stand in the gate of the LORD’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the LORD.
3 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place.
4 Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’
5 “For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute justice one with another,
6 if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm,
7 then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.
8 “Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail.
9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known,
10 and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’–only to go on doing all these abominations?
11 Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the LORD.
12 Go now to my place that was in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell at first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.
13 And now, because you have done all these things, declares the LORD, and when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and when I called you, you did not answer,
14 therefore I will do to the house that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.
15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of Ephraim.
16 “As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you.
17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven. And they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.
19 Is it I whom they provoke? declares the LORD. Is it not themselves, to their own shame?
20 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.”
21 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh.
22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.
23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’
24 But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.
25 From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day.
26 Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.
27 “So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. You shall call to them, but they will not answer you.
28 And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.
29 “‘Cut off your hair and cast it away; raise a lamentation on the bare heights, for the LORD has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.’
The Valley of Slaughter
30 “For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the LORD. They have set their detestable things in the house that is called by my name, to defile it.
31 And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind.
32 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when it will no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere.

As with all scriptures, context matters. Praying for the lost is absolutely an instruction of our Savior. Praying for our wayward nation(s) is absolutely an instruction of our Savior and His Apostles. It may shock you, but the most important thing you can ask is “WHY?” Why did God command Jeremiah (not you and me) to stop praying for “this people” (the people whom God was sending into captivity)?
It’s the same reason why God did not allow the Red Sea generation to enter the Promise Land.
It’s the same reason why God warns in the book of Hebrews, from Chapter 4 – Chapter 11 that there are many who were sinning against God, trampling under foot the blood of Christ and who would not be forgiven.
It’s the same reason why Jesus proclaimed Woes on the Scribes and Pharisees and said of that generation that they were “ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth”.
Who’s “this people” God is referring to? I know God said pray for your enemies and etc.
God was speaking to the Israelites.
